ABOUT imageABOUT image
The National Water and Sanitation Agency of Brazil (ANA) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have had a long-lasting partnership since 2014. The partnership has focused on capacity building in water resource assessments and has led to great advances in several areas including equipment and procedures used for water and evapotranspiration monitoring, quality assurance of data, and water quality modeling.

Cooperation between ANA and USGS has led to significant advances in water quality modeling, including the development of a new open-source modeling and interactive decision support systems within the SPAtially Referenced Regressions on Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model and application of the improved model to understand water quality in Brazil. SPARROW was developed by the USGS to model water quality at a regional scale and was migrated to the R language, now called R-SPARROW, as part of this work.

Ana Carolina Argolo

Director at ANA

Geologist, graduated from the University of Brasilia. Postgraduate in Management and Environmental Technologies from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (USP) and in Environmental Geoprocessing from the University of Brasília (UnB), with a focus on geological risk management and studies of water availability in underground aquifers.

Joel Groten

Director at USGS

Joel is specialist at USGS. He has a M.S. in Water Resources Science from the University of Minnesota and studied karst groundwater and surface water interactions in southeastern Minnesota under Dr. E. Calvin Alexander. Joel serves as a principal investigator related to USGS nutrient and sediment studies.

Ana Paula Generino

Coordinator of Water Quality at ANA

Ana Paula is Water Quality Coordinator at SHE/ANA. With a degree in Biological Sciences from UnB and a Master's degree in Sciences from Fiocruz, Ana Paula has more than 13 years of experience in the field of water quality and sanitary sewage. He has been a specialist in the regulation of water resources and sewage at ANA since June/2010.

Olivia Miller

Specialist at USGS

Olivia is a valuable member of the Utah Water Science Center. Her current research focuses on spatial and temporal analysis of groundwater and surface water quality, and the relationship between land use, climate, and hydrology throughout the southwestern United States.

Marcelo Souza

Specilist at ANA

Marcelo Luiz de Souza, Biologist, M.e., D.r., Ecology, Specialist in Water Resources and Basic Sanitation. He has worked in the water quality area at the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA) since 2010.
